To celebrate the bi-centenary, the heritage education boat Kennet is re-creating the first complete trans-Pennine journey along the canal, with a flotilla of boats following her.

She will be going down the Wigan Flight on Friday 21st October from 10.30am - Link

Does anyone know if Wigan Council are doing anything on Friday to commemorate the opening ceremony which was held at Brittania Bridge 200 years ago

When My parents were in london last year took much pics of the canal there and thames. Our Stlawrence river is called the seaway and they tore many farms down to build it. My hubbys father and two uncles worked on building of it. It opened June 26th1959 the day before my hubby was born. His dad was still working there paing and they found his body. I guess it was a hot day and was having chest pains and sat by a tree and died. We also have the Odgensburg side too of the seaway

Someone told me this morning that the canal at Wigan top lock is to be dyed a gold colour this weekend in celebration of the canals 200th birthday.

Mortarmillbill, I emailed the L&L Bicentenary project manager sarah.knight@canalrivertrust.org.uk (Link) about Fridays events & Sarah promptly replied:

There's to be an official ceremony at Britannia Bridge from approx 2.30 to 2.45 finishing at 3.15

Thanks for that Jo Anne.

Could not find anything from the Council and I never thought about the Canal and River Trust.

The flotilla set off from Wigan top lock at 10.30am this morning and is being followed by loads of photographers and gongoozlers.

Expected at Britannia Bridge around 2.30pm for a ceremony.

Kennet is being steered by a lady for a change.

That third photo of yours when that boat was going through the lock at Manchester Road at Higher Ince, I saw that as I was driving over the bridge at that time
