What barracks was this ?
Hi. Graham,
I thought it was called Dennis barracks, but I was told that it was called King George the 6th camp? the guy who told me was also in the Regiment. It was at Munster Lager
Hi Roland,
There were only two Barracks in Munsterlager, Dennis Barracks and Yeovil Barracks. If you were at Dennis in 1957 you must have been in 6 Field Regt. They were there from 1956 -1962 comprising of H, V and W Batteries. The Barracks was built between 1935 and 1938, it's original name was Heeresversuchstelle Munster-Nord and used as a Nazi chemical weapons testing site. We have now left and nowadays it is a civilian housing and industrial estate. If you want to see what it looks like now email me for some pics.
Cheers
GT
My Father was stationed at Dennis Barracks 62-66 and we lived at a place called Nunnenkamp? I think. I would love to see some pictures of that place if you have any.
You're right, it was Dennis Barracks. The man with the mustache is my late father, Major Charles Allum. The photo must have been taken between 1957-9. Anyone with any memories of him please let me have them.
Richard Allum
I ought to have read the caption. The Battery Comander was my late father-Major Charles Allum.
Richard Allum, i was stationed there 58/60. I was in HQ Bty, radio operator for LCol John Gibbon and I remember Major Allum quite well.He had a splayed finger salute,I assumed from an injury or wound.
Thanks Alan. Yes, that's him. The splayed fingered salute was caused by a war injury.
Richard Allum you must have been my next door neighbour! My father was Major F David Collen who was adjutant and later battery commander of V battery. I have great memories of Dennis barracks, cycling all over it and sledging down into the ditch in front of the officers mess - the nearest thing to a hill for miles around!
Chris, Do get in touch with me. My email address is richardallum1@gmail.com
I've been trying to find you for some time. I've found John Weaver and we've had him and Merry here for lunch a couple of times.
Richard.
My dad joined 6 Field Rgt as Bdr in July 1955 serving at Dennis Barracks. He joined Boys Battery at Kimmel Park in 1948. He then served with 20 Fd Rgt moving with thjem to the Far East and then with 25 Fd Rgt in Malaysia through the 50's before moving to 6 Fd Regt staying with them and then with 132 Battery, through 27 Med and then 39 Regt's until 1972. I don't recall Dennis Barracks or Munsterlager as I was born in BMH Hannover in 1960 whilst he was there. Was W battery at the time an SP battery with the Sexton or am I getting that quite wrong? I was just wondering what the xmas card was with a picture of the Sexton on my dad had and all the photos that seem to be from Hohne with Sextons?
