I think this is my fathers cousin surname possibly Guest or Bagnall. The lettering on the hat band looks like C.L.I.C. but not sure. The photo was taken in Wigan at Millard & Co Market Street. Would love to know what the uniform is, obviously naval but what organisation or possible boarding school for orphans or correctional institute. I would think the photo was taken around 1920 but that's just a guess.

An infamous naval training ship that was based at Menai Straits from 1877 to 1920 was the HMS CLIO. This could be the name on the cap.
If you look at following site you will find a fuller history of what life was like on this sailing ship.

Dave H thanks very much for that I'm sure your right. It ties in with what little I remember my father saying about it.

DH Thanks, what a terrible history that ship had. It seems that the poor boys were treated in a most cruel way. Another outrageous example of how the "godfearing Victorians" treated children

This is John (Jack) Bagnall born in Motherwell Scotland in 1908. His parents John Bagnall and Amy Bagnall (nee Guest)were originally from Wigan.

Just found this on the 1891 wales census.
John Bagnall birth year 1879. Clio Industrial Training School for Boys. He was my fathers Uncle not cousin as I first thought.

Hi, I realise your post was a while ago so hope you get to see this. We are searching for information on the residents of the Clio ourselves. My Great-Grandfather was Frederick John Hampson and also appears in the 1891 Census as being on the Clio at the same time as your relative. Small world hey? Don't suppose you found any further information?
