Hampshire, but has local connections. The main chassis etc was built
at Leyland, the bodywork was created at Northern Counties factory
at Wigan Lane. The advert on the side of the bus shows Percy Powell,
this company became part of Robert Baillie transport whose initial
location from the 1960s was the railway yard at the rear of King Street.
Great photo Ray, must have been Awkward/difficult working on the engine
with that type of coach work build, unlike the old Wigan Corporation bus that we used to operate with Northern Counties Bodies, they had half cab with much easy access to the engine.
According to "Northern Counties of Wigan" book by Eric Ogden (1976) that I have, this was delivered to Southdown Motor Services in 1960 as part of the batch of 50 that were ordered. Later models delivered as part of the order did away with the small opening vent windows on the front.
Thanks to Garry and Barrie for their remarks. I would like to find a copy
of the Northern Counties book by Eric Ogden. I have a more recent book
of Northern Counties from 2006 by Bob Rowe.
Ray, Publisher -The Transport Publishing Company -ISBN 0903839105 & was 1st published in 1976.
This book was my Fathers which I presume he bought in Wigan in the late 70's.
I bought the Rob Rowe book in 2016 from MDS book sales in Glossop where surprising the Transport Publishing Company had their address.
The other book I purchased at the same time was Massey Bros Coachbuilders by Phil Thoms.
