Lovely photo.Looks like a Austin and Atkinson lorrie.
Never heard of the paint works.
What a great, clear, photograph have you any idea of the date?
Agree about the front lorry looking as if it's an Austin, but I think the rear one has "Foden Diesel" on its radiator.
As for a date, Ron - the design on the Austin's radiator, a giant V, an airman and a formation of fighter aircraft - might indicate a post-war Victory parade. The lorries don't have wartime blinkers on their headlights - so not wartime or perhaps even immediately after.
Gary I think the lorries are a Commer and a Foden
Commer in front, Foden behind.
Agree AR, the foremost is a Commer from the commercial division of the Rootes Group.
Garry, Keystone Paints was sited on the left on Atherton Rd going towards Atherton and not far beyond the left turn for Leigh which would have taken you past what was Turners Asbestos factory. It was in a dip in the road and I think it is the site of a used car lot now. When I worked for Berger Paints in Hindley in the late 60s we were still buying Keystone products.
Derekb, Keystone paints was on the left just past the Bird itch Hand on the Prospect Mill site. The one you mention is the Palatine Paint Works in Hindley Green,it is still open
Keystone manufactured paints under the name "Torch Brand"
I recall a "Distemper" wall paint under this brand. Nowadays we know it as "Emulsion " I would estimate this photo to be late 40,s
Pe, thanks for the info, the memory cells are obviously not what they were!!
Very smart truck but they were not very enviromentally friendly. They used to pour paint into Bordane brook which ran by the side of the factory The brook would be multi coulored killing all the fish, mainly stone loach and sticklebacks
First lorry is Commer Superpoise, and the other Foden DG Diesel, could be powered by Foden Four-Cylinder Two-Stroke engine or Gardener. Thanks for the photo, Margaret.
No more carnivals,,Health and softy.
Carnival in Atherton this weekend Ron
Thats right Ron. I remember our milkman had 2 young lads to help him on his rounds, they used to ride on the back and jump off just before he pulled up to deliver our milk...nowt wrong with that.
The first truck/lorrie still looks like a Austin to me.
But nowt like then. Pe.
True Garry but at least they are trying
Health and safety would not let anybody ride on the back of a lorrie today.
Garry.people were on the back of lorries at last years carnival and I have no doubt they will this year
NO it's not allowed. Work men Can't ride or get a lift home in the back of vans anymore. You have to be wearing a seat belt, Safe and secure.
PW they might do, but it's NOT right. Just you wait and see if someone gets hurt.
Garry do you think these people at carnivals stupid. They have EVENT INSURANCE
Insurance will be void.
Garry, you remind me of my youngest granddaughter, she is 5. What she does not know, she makes up
Health and Safety is very powerful these days, don't underestimate it. Look, I agree with you that theirs no harm to ride on the back of lorries, but it's the Law, you CAN'T do it today.
I tend to agree with Gary, health & Safety do put the blocks on many events.
Keystone Paintworks took up most of Platt Lane in Hindley.Tremco took over the premises before it moved on to Hindley Green Industrial Park down Swan Lane.I think Keystone was taken over by Berger paints and moved to Rochdale ,But I could be wrong, any offers.
Quite correct Keystone did become Berger (Magicote) and moved to Middleton. I worked there until they moved as I had a young family and the travelling would have been a problem.
Regarding riding on the backs of lorries. Carnivals still have people on the back...tableaus, Carnival Queens and retinues and all in the full view of and participation with the local constabulary. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K3pSn0tG-UI
The lady's face on the Lordy second from the left is my grandmothers. She was Mary Muskett, nee Readett , formerly Pendlebury who worked at Keystone paints .
