What a great photo John,all the little ones are wearing clogs,and the little lad on the right next door but one to the teacher looks like little lord fauntleroy..just love old photo's of children.

Arent they wonderful! I suspect the appearance of both ladies really tells us nothing about how stern they were? I googled Roughlee School, and apparently more than 100 years later, they are quite an expensive upmarket school, I cant place Nelson, but know it is in Lanc. Looks as if these days they are needing a few teachers there also, vacant positions for several subjects according to their website!

Smiling when being photographed is a relatively recent thing. I suspect with the onset of pictures taken by phone, smiling for the camera ('Watch the birdie!') may in fact decline.

The teachers are smiling,
the children are not.

Up to a couple of years ago we had a Static caravan on a site next door to this school. It's still there, just one small building. It is about 2 miles from Barrowford about 3 from Nelson. A nice area but gets plenty of rain...
