This is a Doctor's Bill for one visit that my Mother had when she was pregnant with my brother in 1944 (Pre-National Health). The Bill was for one pound eleven shillings and six old pence. It took her from October to December the following year to pay it off at the rate of six old pence a week.

Just looking at that bill makes you realise how lucky we are to have the NHS, suppose we some times take it all for granted. Just glad I wasn't around in those days.

Well said micky, Atlee,s post war government did great things for this country: nationalized railways, nationalized coal industry, N.H.S. massive house building program. All this when the country was skint.

I remember seeing Dr Cooke when I was a lad and my mother paid sixpence per week, Dr Cooke was a really gentle man, as well as being a gentleman.
