What a nice pic, a pic of Wigan I can relate to. The wonderful stone building just down from the Makinson Arcade was the National Westminster Bank in my days in Wigan....is that right ? It was not known by the shortened form of Nat West back then.

This picture is so colourful, reminds me of when Wigan had 'Soul' with all the shops, shame now that it has been spoilt with the empty shops and the Grand Acarde!

anyone know for certain the reason woolworths disappeared from wigan

Comment by: Derek Bond on 10th November 2011 at 14:07

In answer to mickey east's question about Woolies. I seem to recall it was part of a national programme Woolies had at the time to close a number of outlets. My sister, who worked for them, always said that Woolworth stores were graded by the range of products sold and that the Wigan branch was classed in the highest grade so it was a surprise when it was marked for closure. Other surprise closures were the big store on Blackpool promenade next to the tower and the store in manchester Piccadilly.

Gerry. I think he is going from the way (MING MENG?????) Campbell , the Politician pronounces his name which is also Menzies!!!!Lots of examples of this ... Magdalen College , Oxford = Maudlin! Glamis Castle = Glarms !!!! Guess we are just not posh enough to appreciate it !!!! lol
One of my posh friends, now living in the South regularly goes shopping in Barrrrth and to Marrrs on a Sunday am...

the reason the shops are empty in the arcade and now the market is because wigan council are a greedy bunch of money grabbers with the rents they charge they will cut there nose off to spite there face wish i lived in bolton at least they have a good market
