load of crap.

Perhaps Rolf Harris is more up your street. Isherwood is a true son of Wigan and we should be proud. His paintings now sell for lots of money and quite rightly so.

We are all entitled to an opinion but unfortunately some of us are prone to giving them on subjects where our knowledge is severely lacking. I suppose Picasso is similarly talentless judging by some of the comments on here.Sometimes it is better to maintain a dignified silence than to prove to the world what a bunch of Philistines we all are.

..... waits for the pathetic line "I may not be an expert but I know what I like".

Looks like the barbeque exploded!

If it didn't say Wigan Parish Church I would have thought it eas a river or harbour scene.

I hadn't realised this board was frequented by such discerning, cultured and well informed people. Whilst we are on a roll, why doesn't someone talk me through "A Brief History of Time" by Stephen Hawking. No doubt many contributors to this thread could put him straight and tell him that the plot was crap and wasn't half as exciting as Coronation Street.

PS My final word on the subject: Monet has never been my favourite artist but I would never dream of saying that his work was crap or that he should be painting toilet doors. It would show a marked lack of class, culture and intelligence - who the hell do some of you think you are to criticise and ridicule a great Wiganer whose talent has been recognised world-wide (except in Wigan)?

Great picture, full of atmosphere.

Comment by: trewyth on 14th July 2011 at 17:04

These are brilliant paintings. Isherwood is much underrated!

Comment by: Carl on 14th July 2011 at 18:47

Stevie Wonder could have painted Wigan much better.
In all honesty all we can say is that Isherwood was from Wigan.
I find it difficult to compare his work with a Monet or Picasso work, so lets leave it there.

Comment by: irene roberts on 14th July 2011 at 19:43

Agreed, Carl. Standing in a studio doesn't make you an artist any more than standing in a garage makes you a car.

Comment by: Ince man on 15th July 2011 at 06:45

I'll tell you what, there's some geniuses who comments on this post, not one of you are qualified to judge any paintings.

Comment by: irene roberts on 15th July 2011 at 08:03

Genii.

Comment by: Bill Eatock on 15th July 2011 at 08:15

Looks like a scene at Liverpool docks with the cathedral in the background. If I painted a scene from Wigan I'd expect it to be reasonably recognisable.
Still - no accounting for taste I suppose...

Comment by: Kenee on 15th July 2011 at 14:30

This is my interpretation:
It is a vision of the future, due to global warming Wigan is flooded. People have been made homeless and are forced to cook on a barbeque, this has exploded (too much paraffin?). You can clearly see blackened figures looking for the remains of sausages.

Comment by: Joseph on 15th July 2011 at 17:42

We say Genii in Ince, Ince mon. How come tha didn't know that, eh?

Comment by: dave b on 15th July 2011 at 19:22

chuff you can fool some of the people all of the time

Comment by: Mark on 16th July 2011 at 13:04

Chuff chuff and bye bye....

Comment by: Ince Man on 16th July 2011 at 15:58

I'm a bit more intelligent than most of you, I try not to speak or use the terms of "Ince language", I'm a bit more up-market than most even though I was born and bred in Ince. Thee and thy wording is just lazy talk...but some you understand it..sadly.

Comment by: Joseph on 17th July 2011 at 01:42

Nay tha not that just daft thee, or tha would a said "Genii" but tha didn't so theer. Up market? Aye Hindley Market.

Comment by: Ron on 17th July 2011 at 13:50

Joseph you realy do sound like a complete fool.

Comment by: Roy on 17th July 2011 at 15:11

I would say Idiot Ron!

Comment by: irene roberts on 17th July 2011 at 15:25

Well he isn't, and I too wasn't happy about someone claiming they are more intelligent than the rest of us, and that none of us are fit to judge paintings, then calling is "geniuses" when there's no such word. We're just proving that we AREN'T lacking in intelligence, that's all.

Comment by: Joseph on 17th July 2011 at 15:59

Like I really care of your opinion, Ron. I am not being abusive or using profanities so whats the problem. Am I not allowed to joke or have a laugh on such a stupid subject?

Comment by: joan beckett (wilding) on 17th July 2011 at 16:58

Is this before ot after the new galleries was built ???????

Comment by: Joseph on 17th July 2011 at 18:04

The fool or idiot is the one who put these idiotic paintings on here hoping folk would be falling over themselves in praise of them. Well they got the reception they deserved, and that's not gone down too well, as it! I am neither inferior mentally or physically to anyone on here. If typing or speaking in the dialect of my Ince family and ancestors makes me a fool then proud I am to be such a fool. It's such a shame the 'foolish' Ince men who sacrificed their lives in two wars did so for the like of priggish folk like yourselves. The Ince dialect is part and parcel of life for folk who where born there no matter where they live now. I thought that was what Wiganworld was about, you have links to dialect sites and posts about dialect around Wigan, but that seems not the case Mr "Local Expert" who knows nowt really!

Comment by: Joseph on 17th July 2011 at 18:11

Pray tell, Roy, why do I sound like an Idiot? Do put your tongue back in, Ron's clean now.

Comment by: irene roberts on 17th July 2011 at 18:51

Of course you're allowed a bit of fun over these paintings, Our Joseph. I know both you and Ron, and you are both Gentlemen with a capital "G" ,and I would be sorry to see you fall out over nasty remarks from people who think they are a cut above and paintings that are frankly not worth falling out over. We pass through this world but once....shake hands.

I would like to have every available Isherwood painting showing on this site. Love them or hate them they are well worth showing.
