Am uploading 2 scans I did of old piano sheet music I have, that belonged to my Grandma b.1883, Daisy Wood, (later changed to Margaret Baron Wood). My grandmother and her father were headmaster and mistress at the Wigan Institute in 1905 when she used to play this music of that era. She later married Fred Lewis of The Limes, Standish. Her name and February, '05 are shown on the pieces.

Hope Temple's autograph appears on this, exact date unknown - also Arthur Sullivan's signature in the same ink appears on the other piece I uploaded. Have only just realised this.

The "signatures" aren't proper signatures, they are facsimilies done from a rubber stamp made from the original signature of the person, which was stamped onto the music cover.

That's interesting Ron. Thanks for that. Actually I was googling all of this, and it sounded like its extremely hard to prove authentic signatures for Sullivan in any case.Cheers.

I think that something as fragile and transitory as these music pieces deserves a mention. The fact of their survival for over a hundred years is noteworthy, and like so much on this site the memory is treaured by the family who now cares for it. Also the music is of interest to some users of the site.

I don't care if they are a thousand years old. THEY HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH WIGAN. This is WIGANWORLD.i.e WIGAN RELATED ITEMS.
There are millions of these about. There like 78rpm records. You can't give them away. So even the rarity factor dosen't come into the equation. I can post some much more interesting sheet music covers, from the 19th century, with illustrations on the covers. Really nice decorative items, much more interesting to look at.. BUT "read my lips" THEY HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH WIGAN. hence I don't put them on this website.

George, I would seriously like to see your 19th century sheet music on here. And of course the Wigan connection to go with it just as I provided? e.g. my grandmother owned this music, it has her name on it, and she played it until c.1908 at her home in WIGAN. She was headmistress of a university in WIGAN at that time. You're raving. shhhhhh...

You won't see my 19th cen. music covers on this site because, As I said in my last post. THEY HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH WIGAN.
Let me get this right, you are advocating that because something was owned by someone from Wigan, that justifies putting it on here? In that way of thinking, a picture of every possession, belonging to everyone, who lives or has lived in Wigan should be put on the site??? Because possession by association is enough of a connection?

Mining and Technical College circa early 1900's. , i.e. a University of the era in WIGAN. Later Mr Wood became an inspector of schools in England. His son and daughter also were part of the teaching fraternity in WIGAN. But I'm sure all of this is a little out of your league. Get over it, George!

Comment by: JIM ROYLE on 27th November 2010 at 21:51

You can call it what you want It's WIGAN MINING AND TECHNICAL COLLEGE. Never has been and never will be a University. Is this you're interpretation or have you seen it written somewhere that it is a University? If so can you let me know where you have seen it?, Instead of telling everyone "I went to Wigan Tech" I can say "I went to Uni." That should put my C.V. up a notch. Hope I won't have to pay my fees back though.

Uni/College/Institute - Precise meaning is open to interpretation depending on the era, also the country in which any are located, and what specialised training and credentials they offered at any one time in their history.. and anyway we're off-topic!
