What a waste. :-(
Wouldnt it be great if leigh still had a railway service.
You're right Harry, where did this line go to? I have noticed two disused lines that went towards the East Lancs Road, great photos Dave.
Hi Martin, Glad you enjoyed them. I have discovered some more only today which I will put on once I have scanned them. If you look at the first picture in the series it gives you some background information about the line. The route of the line is clearly visible on Google or Bing. If the info on the first picture isn't what you want to know, please ask and i'll gladly try to fill in any further questions that you might have
'Wouldnt it be great if leigh still had a railway service'.
It would be better if they had their own web site. This is a WIGAN site not Leigh....
What's the matter with some people, Leigh is part of Wigan since 1974, when all the local councils amalgamated so did the Bus companys. If its owt do with railways I for one want to know about it, after all railways went to the lenth and breath of Britan. Well done Dave, keep the photos coming.
LEIGH isn't a part of Wigan.. It may be classed as that for administration purposes. It's like saying Wigan is part of Manchester. However historically they are two different towns. Ask any Wiganer if they are a part of Leigh, and vica versa, and see what replies you get
Wigan is in Greater Mancherster, Mr Harlow is right.
Wigan, Bolton, Bury, Rochdale, Stockport, Haywood, ETC ETC ETC ETC. All Greater Manchester. Leigh part of Wigan if some people like it or not. Keep the pics coming.
The line ran from Manchester Via Eccles and Tyldesley and on to a branch at Kenyon Junction to join the main Manchester to Liverpool line.
An earlier railway line ran from Bolton to Leigh with the station at Westleigh, later extended to Pennington.
This former railway line is now the route of the bypass road
