Great photograph. You don't see many photogaphs of the tractor.
brings back happy memories of my childhood that...travelling on the tractor with buttys and a drink swimming in canal and just being young...
awwww the tractor...remeber waiting for it at plantation gates..spending the day at haigh hall in the pool then walking home through plants....oh happy memories. Cannot believe this has gone-my kids would love it, the same way they love the minature railway
In the early 60s the tractor had a canvas roof. The fare to Haigh Hall was 3d, but my friend's Grandad, who worked on it, used to let us off. I can see him now, wearing a brown coat-type overall and a flat cap, and I can almost feel the swift rush of wind, chilly even on the hottest day, as the tractor made its rattling descent down the slope from Plantation Gates.
Jumped on back of tractor many times to get free trips either to canal for a swim with swimming trunks and towel shoved up shirt.or further on to the Hall, Those were the days, Some of the happiest of my life.
I used to love going on the tractor when I was little.
Remember about forty years ago, one of the drivers was named Walter. Does anyone recall him?
Someone once told me that the tractors and trailers where from Burtonwood Airfield (or possibly another airbase), left over after the War. They were used to ferry the bombs from the munitions stores out onto the runways to be loaded onto the Bombers. Seems quite plausible but can anyone else comment/verify this ?
My Uncle Fred Taylor drove the tractor for many years and lived at Dairy Cottage with Auntie Molly.
Happy Days.
