Brian, you say the trains heading for Standish, but where has the photo been taken? It looks very much like Amberswood common, Hindley.

By my thinking the train has just come off the bridge that is posted in WW Albums -> Assorted -> Railway -> Item #: 14902, The Iron Bridge over the canal under Rabbit Rocks in Higher Ince. The next point of interest it will pass is the Roundhouse Junction, just before the bridge at the side of the Alexandra public house.

behind the two upright sleepers you can juust make out the bridge which connected Platt Lane fields - was initally of timber construction later updated to concrete - to the left were the 'Grey Hills'
