Bring it back Network rail, and get the heavy freight back on tracks.
BR...too eager to close this important loop and rip the lines up. Today, it would be well used, re-open it.
Everything is the same as today, apart from the tracks.

Dave they could, but who pays for it. When the west coast main line was being electrified, British Railways had all the bridges inspected and strenghtend. A lot of work carried out on the embankments and fences, they had to, because for the first time in the Loop lines history it had to be used for Express passenger trains, from London to Scotland and back, a sight that the line had never seen before. The line coped very well with no problems. That was only in the early 70s and soon after the main line was electrified the line sadly closed.
You could catch a train from Hindley, and go straight to Preston and Blackpool via the whelley loop- great times Dave.
The govenment should help fund with Network rail, and get this line up and running again.
