Caption "Passenger carriage on the platform of Wigan Station which was completed in 1896 and was on the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway. Wigan was a coal mining town at this time. The coming of the railways meant it became easier for coal to be transported around the country and traded."
SUPERB PHOTO. Never seen this photo before. Where did it come from?
I am with Ron... a brilliant photograph.
A stunning photograph - it says so much.
They were still using those 4 wheel carts when i used to get the red eye to Manchester every morning in the fifties.Great pic.
This is so nostalgic. It reminds me of my favourite film Brief Encounter.
Margaret, my friend Geoff used to travel to and from work from here when he was a young reporter with the Wigan Observer, and he says the refreshment room was exactly like the one in Brief Encounter. Isn't this a brilliant photo?
Wonderful stuff...the wet platform highlights the marvellous atmosphere...
The old station was full of character.
Still had gas lighting in the waiting room as late as 1976.
Wonderful, nostalgic photo. Can't you just smell the smoke & steam mingled together, hear the clatter of doors closing & then the whistle.
If you would like to nosalge (is that a word)Over Brief encounter go to Carnforth Station they have done up the refreshment room as it was in the film. you might even meet a dishy doctor if you get summat in your eye
My brother in law worked on this station. His name was Bill Crompton, he worked there until it's closure. Great shot and I will be showing it to his wife. Great getting a boat from Preston up to Carnforth, lovely stretch along the canal. Just a short distance from the station. Films are shown of the Brief encounter, and you can have a drink in the station cafe. Very well done for the ones who remember the film, not forgetting the old clock. There was also a sweet shop that sold all the old fashioned toffees of yester year. But sadly it has closed.
