Looks like a very young Jim, so I think it could be the 1920's. l stand to be corrected but I think Jim's son was a Butcher at one time.

Kieth It Was a very young Jim Suullivan and I think he married Billy,s daughter. Her brothers Eric and John? also had a butchers shop in scholes almost next door to their fathers and this is one of them with Jim

Alan B - yes, Jim married Eva, Billy Highton's daughter. I remember chatting with her in the years after Jim's death, and her telling me about her family.

Thanks for the clarification Alan B - always good to get the facts right.

Just to add another fact, James Kevin Sullivan married Eva Linney Highton at Wigan Register Office in 1928.

Keith, are you sure they were married in the registry office? His funeral was at St Cuthbert's (Catholic church).

John - I think Keith must have got his information from the Lancashire BMD site, where part of the entry for the Sullivan/Highton wedding reads "Wigan, Register Office or Registrar Attended".
The key phrase is “or Registrar attended”.
If they had been married in a Catholic church, they would have had to have a Registrar in attendance.

Thanks Mick, that's what I thought.

John and Mick you are quite right - my assumption is just that an assumption - since no church was mentioned. Great to know you don't get away with incorrect facts on wiganworld, keep up the good work.

Hi, would anyone be able to confirm if it is Billy or John Highton? I know it isn’t Eric but would like to know more if possible.

Comment by: Keith on 16th June 2019 at 12:54

In all likelihood it is Billy, since he was Jim's father-in-law. In the 1911 Census, William Highton was a master Butcher operating at 99 Scholes and one of his children was Eva Linney Highton, then aged 7. She later married Jim Sullivan in 1928.
