T.S. 'Syd' Battersby won silver for the 1500 metres freestlye at the 1908 London Olympics, and later gave his medal to his employer, for allowing him time off work to train and compete.

Sally - the book is available through Waterstones both in hard copy and as an ebook, and there are quite a few second hand volumes available on Amazon.

A Thomas Sydney Battersby was born in Wigan (Hindley) in late 1887, so by 1908 he would have been 20 years of age, just the right age for the Olympics.
