Only watched Latics once sometime in 50s Dad took me .Latics v aRussian team can't remember there name or result .Remember it was a full house.
Latics played Kharkov in 1970. The story about Mikhail Gorbachev being a Latics started as he was supposed to be one part of the Russian club.
Is the ref John Robinson from Wigan.

When Wigan played FC Kharkov, Mikhail Gorbachev was Kharkov's Assistant Club Secretary. They're now FC Metalist Kharkiv (Kharkov in Russian). The story goes that Gorbachev was so impressed by Wigan's set-up, he became a big fan. Someone has a photo of the programme on flickr. Price 6d.
Just checked my match records of games I've seen and the referee was John Robertson
The Gorbachev story is of course a load of nonsense. He had no links at all with the Ukrainian team. Even in the times of the USSR Ukraine and Russia kept apart. It was a story invented in the Bangkok Daily Post by a British reporter, Roger Crutchley.
Not an ounce of truth in it, even though it's a nice tale.
Six latics players in the photo and I only recognize two. Immediate left and right Kevin Langley/ Ian Griffiths. Out of interest can anyone name the other four please.
The team was: Farnworth, Duffy, West(Hollis), Robertson, Skipper, Johnson, Strong(Ogden), McKearney, Gavin, Morton and Langley
I would say McKearney is next to Langley with Strong on the far side. Probably Gavin challenging for the ball with Morton furthest forward. The big lad looks like Robertson out of position.
