I was at Central Park the day he broke his leg, not a big crowd on that day and you could hear the leg snap all around the ground. Sickening!

Comment by: Keith on 20th November 2010 at 20:37

just for the record, Dave Stephens made 39 appearances for Wigan 1965 - 67, scoring 22 tries and kicking 7 goals.

That's what I call a man. Where did dave go after he left pem? Also does anyone know if he is still alive?

This is strange. Why is there no one else on the pitch?

Comment by: Alan on 22nd November 2010 at 16:17

Just a guess. Was it half-time and nobody told them?

Comment by: al on 23rd November 2010 at 16:31

mignt of been a sevens match

Comment by: Alan Rowley on 23rd November 2010 at 19:38

It can't be the corner flag.
If you follow right hand touch line down from the top of the photo it looks like it's quite a way from the corner of the pitch

Comment by: Alan on 23rd November 2010 at 20:19

If that's NOT the corner flag, no wonder we can't see anyone else, they'll be "lost" in the other half of this ginormous field.

Barrie
I'm sure he went back to Castleford which I seem to remember was his home town, don't know if he's still with us or not.
I do remember when he first arrived at Pem Boys ( 1965 ? ),we were a football school and he put a list up of who wanted a trial for a rugby team and what position you'd like to try, I put left fullback and we had 3 centre forwards !!!

Comment by: Barrie Winrow on 3rd December 2010 at 15:20

Phil,Thanks

Your right about the football, it was probably Jem, Dave and me who were the centre forwards ha ha. stay well.

I think the game when he broke his leg was at Knotty Ash Liverpool City's ground, I remember hearing that awful sickening crack around 1966?

That's my Dad and i'm happy to say he's still with us. After wigan he went back to Castleford RL and left in 70/71 to teach full time. He is now retired from teaching and lives in Skipton and still follows wigan (and cas). Nice photo - my dad would say the reason there is no-one else in the picture is because he was so fast!!!

Just found this site, Mr Stephens was our teacher at Airedale Secondary Modern school then at Airedale High, both in Castleford. Around 1969 to 1973. Was our rugby teacher, we won the Yorkshire schools cup due to him but unfortunately lost in the final the following year. Great teacher, lovely fella. Hope he’s still around, give him my best regards.

I hope Mr Stephens is still with us. He won us our first cup for Pemberton at Central Park. What a top bloke
