Absolutely brilliant stuff! Thank you Tom
Great programme Tom. At the end of the 1961/62 season Wigan Rovers left the Cheshire league and were replaced by Wigan Athletic from the Lancashire Combination. (And the rest is history)
is that the same kenny bnks who was first team trainer at the latics?.
The Ken Banks mentioned is indeed Kenny Banks of Wigan Athletic.
im sure i can remember a match between wigan athletic and wigan rovers taking place around 1960 with an attendance of around 10,000 this could only have been a friendly as they where never in the same league
Wigan Athletic played Wigan Rovers four times, all at Springfield Park. The first meeting took place in Rovers first season in the First Round of the Liverpool Non League Senior Cup ( Sept 9th 1959 ) A superb crowd of 7,821 saw Latics win the first ever " Wigan Derby" with a 4-1 win ( Higham 15 seconds 23mins & 83 mins McDermot 38 ) and Hatsell replying for Rovers .
The second meeting of the two Wigan Football teams took place on August 29th 1960, again in the First Round of the Liverpool Non League Senior Cup. Athletic ran out 4-2 winners, in front of a crowd of 3,035. Unlike the first meeting , sadly no programme was printed for this game .
My apologies , Wigan Rovers only played Wigan Athletic (all away) on three occassions. The third and final meeting took place in the First Round of the Lancashire Junior Cup on January 18th 1964 ( a programme was produced ) , before a crowd of 1,380. Athletic winning convincingly 7-0 . The Rovers would return to Springfield Park in 1968-69, 1969-70 and 1970-71 , but only to play the Wigan Athletic Reserve team in Lancashire Combination fixtures.
Thanks for the extra information Rod;- I didn't remember that "true blue" Kenny Banks had gone over to the newly formed Rovers. I went to the match which had a good atmosphere for a cup which wouldn't normally attract many spectators. As a Latics fanatic, I thoroughly enjoyed the match and in fact, still have the programme! For the teams, go to the Wigan Athletic section as it didn't seem right putting the Latics' programme on the Rover's section.
Hi, I wonder if someone on this post could help me? I was trying to get hold of a match programme for my Dad. It's Wigan Athletic v Wigan Rovers some time from about late 1950s or early 60s? Is there a particular website where you can find programmes? Thanks! Nicky
