There was a few pubs around Wigan and districts that held lodges of Buffaloes, notably with a plaque near the door with RAOB. I never knew what as a society they stood for but do know they did some really good charitable deeds here and there, though you don't hear of them now.

Buffaloes, stood for fighting injustice in the community, and caring, by giving mutual support. Providing friendship, social activities, and charitable works. You seem to be so proud of your grandad Jake, and he looks a very kind man.Keep the lovely photos coming.

I sent a Comment last evening which hasn't appeared yet - to the effect that I'd Googled 'Airfield Lodge RAOB' and came up with a sale of Masonic etc oddments - including a pair of RAOB cufflinks inscribed with a name and date, and 'Airfield 8862". The RAOB were associated with the Services, with Lodges on bases - perhaps William joined one associated with an RAF airfield. The pic of him in Malaya seems to have him in Army uniform - but he could have been in the RAF.

I remember the buffs in many pubs and later on was asked to join which I never did.The guy who asked me to join did plenty charity work and every year came to our house dressed as Father Christmas and gave my kids a present.I only have a couple of pictures of one of my Grandads who I can barely remember and both my Grandmothers died before I was born so I think you are lucky Jake to have some nice possessions to remember them.

Hi jake, sounds like you grandad was a very proud man the certificate is certainly RAOB, I am a member of this organisation and joined in 1983 I travelled the country to other lodges raising monies for various charities, I eventually ended up ROH (Roll of honour) which is the highest degree in RAOB, the lodges used to meet weekly there was quite a few in Wigan but sadly now all gone, they had main headquarters in Tyldesley where all lodges met once a month to discuss their businesses and monies raised, they even had hotels where members could go to for benevolence, I enjoyed my days as a member and I'm pretty sure you're grandad would have done to.
