My great aunts Charlotte, on the right, and Mary Ann.
They worked at the Crow Pit, or Long Lane colliery as it was otherwise known.
The pit was near to the junction of Bryn Road, previously known as Long Lane, and Lockett Road.
They retired shortly after the photo was taken at which point Charlotte was awarded the British Empire Medal for 50 years service to the coal mining industry.

Hi Karen. They lived in the house adjacent to the fence, 8 Willow Street, Park Lane. It was about 20 yards on the Wigan side of the Wigan/ Ashton boundary. Warrington Road/ Wigan Road.

Their headgear look a bit like nun's wimples, or have been watching too much 'Call The Midwife'!
