Lyndon I'm overwhelmed here! This is my grt grt grt Grandfather. I can't believe it! He would be Edna's grandfather! She would have been 3 yrs old when he died! The missing chess piece would be his son -Edna's father...! Even if you haven't got a photo of him - this is a treasure! I suppose because Edna died young her daughters wouldn't have had much connection with their maternal relations.

He is a handsome chap - do you know anything about him Lyndon? I know he died at Leigh. I wonder if Edna's father Sam looked like him. I have gone from having one photo of Edna who I never knew to her grandfather! It's amazing!

Sorry it's my grt grt grandfather ...must be the shock of seeing him! If you had not mentioned your grandmother Nelly in the christening picture I would not have seen these pictures which mean a lot to me! I remember my mother saying they used to take some dinner to their grandfather when he worked on the railway. They lived in Grt George St so it must have been nearby. Only for Wigan World this wouldn't have happened!

Veronica, I am pleased my photos have brought you so much pleasure. I do have a photo. of a couple with the lady bearing a resemblance to Edna but it is only speculation.

Weren't old men old in those days. If he was born in 1833, and this was taken around 1890, he would have been under 60, but he looks older than I look and feel at the age of his death just over a decade later. Thank goodness for the NHS!

He looks the archetypical grandfather to me but I may be biased Rev. The hard physical work of mining probably didn't help either. His hands look quite large as well. I never in my wildest dreams thought I would find a photograph of a Crompton ancestor after all the research I have done. I almost feel I know him.
