Belle Green Lane in Ince and on to Pennington lane, just on the left was Sutcliffe's tripe works.
At one time around the late 70s, the works was used has a tyre fitting bay.
Oh that is a blast from the past, I used to be friends with Jim and Marcia Sutcliffe, but that was almost forty years ago, I wonder where they are now
I have a video made by Geoff Shryhane of The Wigan Observer showing the old market hall just before it was demolished, and Jim Sutcliffe is interviewed on it.
Dad was allowed to use the van when we were not doing deliveries, I can remember washing it out, putting cushions and chairs in the back and going off to Southport or Ainsdale for the day with the extended family. I remember the car-park attendant at Southport letting us park for free in exchange for a bag of tripe and trotters.
What a lovely memory, Susan, of those halcyon days before health-and-safety and "Jobsworths".
Used to see Jim Sutcliffe and his wife Joan regularly, up until their retirement 15 or 20 years ago.
Someone told me they now lived abroad, but can't vouch for that.
Does anyone have any memories/stories of Sutcliffe's tripe works? Would love to know about the Sutcliffe family, how they got into the business etc. is it possible to get hold of a copy of the interview Irene?
Have sent you an email, Susan.
I am the daughter of Mildred Sutcliffe who was the eldest sibling of the family, she helped build up the business before Jim, her brother, took over. Mildred married a Ferranti design engineer Alan Smith and moved to Cheshire. I am their youngest child and have an older brother and sister. None of us have had children of our own.
Stella Sutcliffe married John France and stayed in Wigan. They had two sons and a daughter, my cousins, who all still live in Wigan and Standish with their new families. All of them have had children now and the eldest son is now a grandad.
Jim Sutcliffe was the youngest. He ran the business for a long while and was married to Joan. They had one son, David who, at 21 sadly and suddenly died. About a decade ago Jim also died leaving his beautiful wife Joan in a lovely home in Southport.
Marjorie was the youngest daughter and married Frank Jarvis. She had three children a boy and two girls. Later she marred again, JIm Thomas, and they had a son.
Stella was the second sibling to die a few short years after her husband so Mildred and Marjorie are all that are left at the time of writing.
Mildred is 96, doing well and I am sitting with her now as I write. Marjorie is going strong in Essex with her four children and four grandchildren.
We all get together for weddings and funerals and everyone of us send cards to the other relations.
Mum remembers her family days very well and the Sutcliffes tripe firm. They were just building a refectory/place to have a tea and a sit down when she moved away. She, even pregnant with her son, did go back on occasion to help out until Jim was up and running.
James and Ethel Sutcliffe, my grandparents, moved out of their bungalow into an apartment in Southport. My nana died in her 70's recovering from a successful operation in hospital and my grandfather was taken in by each of the children for a spell until he died in his 70's on his wedding anniversary.
Hi Susan did you are any of your family live in pennington Lane regards kevin
