what a good pic realy captures the era are they wearing the famous woolies plastic sandals that was all i wore when i was a kid and had to be grateful
Oh yes Julie, they are the famous plastic sandals. Behind the dustbin is the outside toilet I think, but if my memory serves me right, there was an inside one as well. Remember the old tin bath?
Yes I remember to outside loo on icy cold days and I remember the galvanized metal bath in front of the fire. In fact our first "plumbed" bathroom was a gas washing boiler perched above a bathtub, with one cold water pipe running to it, the boiler was set so that it drained into the tub and we had a hot bath, the bath drain ran out through the wall into a downspout... today's housing codes might just frown on the rig.
My grandmother Jane McCoy lived at 13 Letterewe Street until 1960; can I ask if they were all pretty much the same as the picture? It shows a good sized yard, could I ask how many rooms the houses consisted of? The only image of Letterewe Street I've ever seen has been an aerial pic, so thanks for this.
An excellent book by Olga Cannon titled 'The Road from Wigan Pier" gives an excellent insight into The Potteries area and its people in the first half of the 20th century.Lovely photo with memories for many older people,Susan.
A wonderful picture Susan - innocent days eh!
I am from Poolstock and I used to go to school with some kids from the Potteries (Poolstock C of E). Glenys West (who is sadly no longer with us) Alex Sweeney (also dead) and Ian Ford.
I knew a Mary Scully that lived in the Potteries..she emigrated to oz but sadly no longer with us..and she and her husband used to write their own songs..they had a few instruments they would play while Mary sang country and western songs..she had the most beautiful voice...I wonder if anybody remembers her.

Caro, there were thousands of houses like this in Wigan in the 60s. They usually had two bedrooms upstairs and two rooms downstairs, no bathroom and a small toilet built in the yard.
Does anyone know the names of all the streets, starting off with the ones on the right hand side of Eckersley Mill. I know there is a Pottery Street, Letterewe Street and a Cudworth Street, and a corner shop (Mrs Matthews), but not sure which is which.
Walking down Pottery Terrace You first come to Letterewe St,then Pottery st,then cudworth st.
My Aunt Alice & Uncle Wilf Lawrence lived in Pottery Street
Does anyone remember the Hamiltons of Cudworth St? Thye left in 1952 to come to Australia? Does anyone have photo's of Cudworth St?
My cousins Al and Sue in the year I was born.I wish I could go back!
My Uncle Jack Cheetham and Auntie Lilly lived at 19 Letterewe Street. He used to cut my hair in the backyard when I was about 9 with clippers. My Aunt Margaret lived a few doors down. Generations of the family lived in this house.
