In the Album, the photos of my family, my Grandad, Richard Roughley is on there - a few times. His wife was also Margaret - nee Stringfellow. Is this Richard a relative of mine?
Hi Maggie, I am aware of the Richard Roughley and Margaret Stringfellow you refer to. I have traced "my Roughleys" back to around 1750 but have not found a link yet. All Roughleys originate from approximately the same area namely Bickerstaffe,Windle,Skelmersdale, Prescott et al so there will be a link somewhere. Who knows we may be 34th cousins!
Regards
I have quickly looked through the info I have, but I cannot find a Richard born in 1906. They were a wandering lot - did you know some went to U.S.A.?
Maggie, He was born on the 9th January 1907 at 297 Billinge Road, Pemberton, Wigan. His mother was born Rosetta Aspinwall and her uncle was Thomas Aspinwall who just failed to beat Sir Francis Powell (lost by 110 votes)when he was the Liberal/Labour candidate for parliament. He was a very well respected Miner's Agent and upon his death a plaque was erected to him at Wigan Infirmary where he became Vice-President and can still be seen on the wall of the old entrance. I don't know if it is allowed to post links on here but an interesting article can be viewed at http://www.btinternet.com/~garswood/ta1.htm - Yes I do know that some Roughleys went to America - some were also transported to Australia but their roots can all be traced back to this area going back to the 13th Century and beyond.
Regards
Maggie,
I'm fairly sure I have found the link between your "Roughleys" and mine. It looks like our families are descended from two brothers; Peter Roughley (b 1813) in your case and Thomas Roughley (b 1816) in my case. The general feeling is their parents were Richard Roughley (b 1791) and Jane Middlehurst (b 1790). So............... we probably are 34th cousins !!!
regards
Myself and Maggie both follow on from Peter, but he was born in 1809 at Windle. He married Mary Maria Marland in 1833 and he died in Wyoming. His father was a John Roughley born 1786 at Parr, Sentellin. Unfortunately the same names crop up for generations, loads of Richard, Peter, Thomas, Mary, Jane, Esther, so John could have been a brother of your Richard
Yes - that is the same Peter I referred to. Beyond this I found it got a little hazy that is why I referred to the brothers rather than their father.
regards
Richard roughley is my granddad i am the son of margarey and bernard oneill. Marg and alan who sent this photo are his son and daughter.
Sorry made a bad spelling mistake its marjorie oops lol
My great grandma was Alice Roughley..she married William Evans. Will have to go thro my notes for more details, but I'm sure those names crop up on our family tree.I was born in Atherton, but moved here to N.Ireland over 10yrs ago.
As I see it,my gt grandma Alice Roughley,b. upholland, married William Evans, and they lived in Mealhouse Lane.Atherton(the house were I lived in 1960s)
Alice's parents were John Roughley.,b.c1826 and Phoebe Grounds(or Grimes on some records).,b.c1827...they married 30.8.1846.
John Roughleys parents were William Roughley(1788-1831)and Mary Marsh.
Williams parents were Peter Roughley(1750-1827)and Mary Foster(Forster)1756-1826
Are any of these names familiar? Feel free to tell me if I got em wrong! Lol
Our Roughleys are from,Upholland.,windlle.,Prescot.,rainford areas,as are other parts of my family..the Evans' and the Farringtons.
