This is a photo of the entrance to the drift mine.
It had not been worked for some years but was still being used to pump water to drain the workings of the disused 'Basket pit' (Blundells) further up the road towards Windy Harbour, and the Windy Harbour pit itself, which was still in use.

I have been down that pit when i was about 12 with my dad John Bradshaw or Jack as he was known. He was looking after it so the water could be pumped from Windy Harbour where he worked. Iremember all the different roadways branching off and he told me that all the houses where above us. What an experience for a child to be shown a drift mine, you would get locked up today with all the legislation, one memory that will live with me forever. |
