This shot was taken from beyond Scotsman's Flash with Bryn Moss directly behind. It's tricky to see Scotman's with the colour loss but the flash is never short of a wave or two and despite the apparent unruffled calm of the canal you can just make out the usual white froth on the eastern shoreline.
Moss bridge is just visible also and the canal really looks like a cut at this point. There's no fancy stonework to decorate and protect its passage and permanence through Ince Moss, just the rough hewn, high and sheer banks marking a channel across this pretty barren if industrial landscape. Compared with the beautiful, tree-lined avenues at Haigh boathouse or at Crooke, for example, sections that whilst they could never aspire to the stately description 'river' but would be warm and happy to be known as 'waterway', I'd say that this would have to settle for being a good old 'cut'.
But, there's a deeper beauty here - perhaps, literally. The activities that have taken place underground have shaped this landscape for the most part and it must have been a tremendously hard life for the people.
There's a hard beauty here.

The cooling towers look to be in operation and I would aim a date of about 1953 but possibly a touch earlier.
