Some good farm pictures Mick. Do you have anything about Dean Wood House OR Farm, as the're divided up now from the original farm. Lafford Lane Upholland. Just a bit further down from the golf club on the same side?

Comment by: Mick on 12th October 2007 at 00:38

Afraid not, Dave. I do know the farm though - I used to work there from time to time, over thirty years ago, when it was Bond's Farm.

Comment by: Dave on 12th October 2007 at 17:16

Thanks all the same Mick, its just that my daughter has the converted barn and we dont have any history on it. Although "Bonds" is something we didnt know. If you do have anything in future then please let me know.

Where was Newgate Farm in Holland Moor? It looks like a farmhouse down the road from where I used to live on Ormskirk Rd. We lived next to the old school on Back Lane.
The people who lived in this farmhouse that I remember, did not seem to be farmers. They had a big, wild orchard at the back that was in the spring full of daffodils. There were lots of children, newspaper on the table, big black coal range in the kitchen, harmonium in the parlour & it seemed they were a very happy family. Think the surname was Rigby.

Bond's farm that was in Lafford lane was it owned my Frank Bond. My Auntie was Married to his brother Horace who had a farm just passed the Fox at Roby Mill on the other side of the raod. I think it was called Knights farm and they lived at the top of Bonk brew.

Helen - According to an OS Map circa 1890, Newgate Farm was on Ormskirk Road, about 100 yds west of the Stanley Hotel; somewhere near the present junction of Ormskirk Road and Dorchester Road.
There was also a Newgate House, a short distance away (I think this may still be standing).

Let me put you all right, this house belongs to my family, The Rimmers who have lived there for as long as I can remember, the house is just off Denholme off what is now newgate road, the front of this house cannot be seen from the road.

I know where you mean Christine. On the OS map I mentioned above, your family home is marked as Newgate House. The note on the back of the original photo said 'Newgate Farm' - evidently a mistake by the photographer, as the farm stood on Ormskirk Road.

The farm that was on Ormskirk Road approx 200 yards towards UpHolland Moor from the Stanley Hotel was farmed by George Heaton. Rimmers farm was about a further 200 yards towards UpHolland Moor and set back from Ormskirk Road by about 150 yards.

Jack Rimmer lived there, he used to have a fruit and veg stall outside during summer months, Jack died around 1990.

A photograph of this very house - Newgate House - has been passed down to me by co-descendants of my maternal great-great-grandmother Gertrude Dale, born Brown (1851-1927). her mother Maria Brown, born Rigby was born (22 February 1830) in this house according to family papers as were all of her many siblings. The house was purportedly built by an ancestor William Rigby in 1707 and was inherited by his great-great-grandson Thomas Rigby (born Newgate House 1789). After his death the house was sold c. 1857 to Dr John Rigby of Chorley (a distant relative?).

Just a little trivia - between the farm owned by Jack Rimmer and the farm owned by George Heaton was a house named 'Candy' it was a substantial house with a large hedge all the way round it.
In that house a girl was born, her name 'Catherine Ashton' - she is now known as Baroness Ashton of Upholland.
She is the European Union's High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy. Under the Treaty of Lisbon this post is combined with the post of Vice-President of the European Commission.

I was wondering if any one has any more information about the residents of Newgate house? I have a photo which I submitted to be uploaded to this album, of an old lady stood in the doorway of this house. I believe the photo was taken in the 1920's and I am told she is my great grandmother although I don't know her name, she had a son named James Marland, possibly out of wedlock, the child's father was also called James Martland.
Can any one tell me anything else about the residents of the house in the first half of the 1900's? or the possible identity of the old lady or anything of the Martland's in the area?

Just to correct some info posted further up the thread, the house mentioned that me and my family lived in was named Kandy, not Candy as is now the doctor's surgery in Upholland

We live at 162b Ormskirk road and have been told we live on the spot the farm house originally was and the couple who owned the farm house lived in our house when it was first built as it was where their original house once stood not sure how true this was and wonder if anyone had any information to back this up
