There’s a certain lady whose name appears on this forum from time to time that I feel would recognise this location instantly . Everyone else will have to either decipher the information on the boards or just take a wild guess .

Gizza clue Oz. I have no idea perhaps Irene has.

Comment by: Cyril on 30th April 2024 at 15:10

I won't spoil your quiz by naming the location Ozy.
On looking the gable of that house is still the same and I've seen it a few times in the distant past whilst in the queue for the car wash, though I don't remember this unique looking bricks and mortar garage, only the modern glass and plastic forecourt which was there.
I've often wondered as to why after the fuel filling station nothing has ever been built on the land, even with it being in a prime location it is still decades later, standing derelict and fenced off.

NO CLUES !!!

Comment by: Veronica on 30th April 2024 at 20:05

I could look it up you know but that’s cheating!

Comment by: . Ozy . on 30th April 2024 at 21:33

Look it up if you like Veebs but Timepix doesn’t specifically identify the location as such .
Reading the information on the board however will take you to at least 100 metres of the location .
Give it a go . I thought I’d explained how it all works weeks ago .

Comment by: . Ozy . on 30th April 2024 at 21:50

My mistake , Timepix does actually identify this particular location specifically , but don’t cheat , try to work it out the hard way …

Attagirl .

It’s like looking for a needle in a haystack..I give up but it’s not Scholes anyway. It looks a bit more up-market. It’s definitely not Shangri La. I can only think it could be around the Swinley area.

Ozy, on another comment about a similar petrol station, MikeW commented as to why the site in the above photo is still as it is many years after the buildings and old tanks had been cleared, I've copied and pasted the comment below - but have removed the location name.

Veronica, Ozy isn't giving you any clues, however, do you remember the children's guessing game of "Hot & Cold", if so then you are quite warm in your thought.

In answer to the question regarding the vacant land at the top of - . There is a restrictive covenant in place that prevents it being used for residential purposes. Until such time this covenant is lifted the land is practically worthless.

I have looked and looked Ozy and studied the clueses but still don’t have a clue!

Comment by: Veronica on 1st May 2024 at 15:14

I thought as much Cyril they have a bathroom in the end house! I posted an answer but it’s not come through the ‘pony express’ ! Watch it come after this!;o)

Judging by the reflection of the fuel pump in the glass window , I would guess that they sold Fina petroleum in 1951 .
However I seem to recall it being a Texaco station prior to closing . Would that be correct Cyril ?
If so , then that may be a bit of a clue .
But all the information required is already there on the fella’s board .

Comment by: Cyril on 1st May 2024 at 21:07

I can't say for sure Ozy, we would go to there on occasions if the car needed a scrub with it being an automatic with brushes even though they sometimes ripped off aerials and wing mirrors, because the one near the Brocket was hard work with being a pressure wash with a lance. We drove Toyotas and they ran on the cheaper 2* stuff so we tended not to bother about brands, though I do seem to remember the Texaco star shape on the big pole at the front.

Veronica, with you being a reader - the road which those houses at the rear are on is the name of an author, and who one of the UK’s most prestigious literary prizes is named after.

There’s a couple of names Cyril I can think of…Wordsworth Ave and Copperfield Rd. Not forgetting Charles St. What the Dickens how many more?

Comment by: Meg on 1st May 2024 at 22:29

Tennyson Drive, Milton Grove, Walter Scott Avenue ?

Comment by: . Ozy . on 2nd May 2024 at 10:18

I was rather hoping that the lady I referred to in my opening comment may have seen the photo and responded , but nothing as yet unfortunately .

But Veronica , it’s painful watching you suffer , so type ‘ grid reference finder ‘ into your device , then enter SD57880817 into the box labelled grid reference , press go and it’ll take you to the precise location .

The grid reference on the chap’s board only takes you to a 100x100 metre square , (which quite frankly just isn’t good enough to satisfy my exacting standards I’m afraid).

You’ll be sure to let us know how you got on I presume ?

b.t.w , I have something that may be of interest to Irene if you happen to speak to her .

Comment by: Veronica on 2nd May 2024 at 11:13

I’ll take your advice Ozy -but you see the upper realms of Wigan Lane area was far beyond the reach of a girl from Scholes (apart from the tree lined road to Wigan Infirmary of course which I travelled on numerous occasions!) plus I’m a stranger these days after 50 odd years. I think I know who you mean though who should know.

Comment by: Ian on 2nd May 2024 at 12:14

I believe, it is where there was, later, a more modern petrol station. This more modern petrol station was demolished some time ago and there is nothing but scruffy derelict land now, which certainly is an eyesore.
Veronica, think of a Scottish poet, but don't take all knight and day about it. :-)

Comment by: . Ozy . on 2nd May 2024 at 15:02

Veronica , I appreciate the fact that you may not be overly familiar with the stockbroker area of Wigan , same as the one wot I live in , but that isn’t the point .

The point is if you get used to using grid reference numbers you can identify the location of every one of those Timepix photos without needing to read the accompanying caption .
( that’s if there is one )
Moreover , it’s actually an absolute doddle .

Trust me , I know what I’m talking about as I know doctors and dentists you know .

Comment by: Veronica on 2nd May 2024 at 16:18

Sir Walter Scott and Lochinvar the Knight. But where’s the connection with Elmfield Rd off Wigan Lane? Is there a Walter Scot Ave? The springs are whirring..

Comment by: Veronica on 2nd May 2024 at 16:37

Ps how do I find the ‘grid’ professor?;o))

Comment by: Cyril on 2nd May 2024 at 17:14

Meg & Ian, a pity Veronica hasn't taken note of you posts - as you certainly know your Scottish Bards, and the station at Edinburgh must have been on his mind too. ;¬)
Though with saying the upper realms of Wigan Lane I think she's teasing with Ozy.

Comment by: Ian on 2nd May 2024 at 17:39

Veronica, there is a Walter Scott Avenue. But, it is much further along Wigan Lane than the infirmary.

Comment by: . Ozy . on 2nd May 2024 at 20:19

Blimey Veebs , just type these three words into your flippin ‘ iPad .

Grid is the first word , followed by Reference , then ending with Finder … or do I aft’ traipse all t’ road up to blimmin’ Howfen an’ do it fo’ thi ?

Comment by: Ian on 2nd May 2024 at 22:12

Cyril, I think she's teasing us all.
By the way, I knew the family that lived in the second house down (next door to the house with the gable end showing).

Comment by: Veronica on 3rd May 2024 at 09:11

I didn’t realise you could just type ‘grid’ in Google (- Hey it’s a miracle! )…I was trying to find ‘grid’ on the Time pix site!. Thank you Ian as soon as you said ‘knight and day’ it clicked. One of my favourite ‘pomes’ from school.
“ 0 young Lochinvar came out of the west .
Through all the wide border his steed was the best.”…The good knight came to the rescue!
Something else I’ve learned with technology - it’s not all bad. Cyril I had heard of the avenues named after the Poets but couldn’t pinpoint where they actually are..plus it’s Elmfield Rd where Yon Mon is pointing. There endeth the lesson for today Ozy.

Comment by: Cyril on 3rd May 2024 at 13:04

Veronica, it is confusing with only a sign for Elmfield Road being at the point of entry and not one for Walter Scott Avenue. There actually is a sign but it's on the front of the house that's seen on the photo, and is corroded so not clearly seen, if you look on the Google street map on the link below and zoom in, the nameplate is below the bedroom window that's above the front door, and even close up it isn't clearly made out,

The lesson may well have endeth for today Veronica , but there’s every chance that it will beginneth again some time soon ….
So best get practising .

The house with the gable end is still there and hasn't changed much at all. I walked past it this morning. The photographer will have his back to Wigan Lane, Wigan to his left and Standish to his right. Walter Scott Avenue is to his immediate right with the un adopted Elmfield Road branching off. As previously stated, the garage/forecourt site is fenced off and in a sorry state due to a deed of covenant being in place with strict instruction as to what the site can be developed into. It's been like this for a good few years and it may be a good few more before there's any change.
