Photograph titled Scholes Rows? Can anyone identify where this is?

Is it Scholes in Wigan? There are areas called Scholes in other places. I hope it's Wigan and that someone can identify it as such.

It’s not a street I recognise. Perhaps Tom Walsh might know where it is.
I know there’s a Scholes Bank in Horwich and they are stone terraces.

I'm certain that this is not Scholes Wigan.

Looking closely I still of the opinion it not Scholes , but there are some similarities to Hardybutts the 3 houses with steps .the 3 shops oh the left could have been demolished and new houses built on the site the corner of Hardybutts and John Street. The shop on the right there was an off licence on the corner of Hardybuts and Cambridge Street. I'm beginning to doubt myself !

There’s a time pix of the corner of Cambridge St and Hardybutts Tom. I’ll post it I think you’ll change your mind again.

If it is Scholes in Wigan could that possibly be St Pats church or school in the background on the left hand side?

Look at item 34919. There’s no shops on the left but there’s houses with steps. Not sure about the school though…

Ps it looks like there’s a pub further down and there was a pub called The Cotton Tree on a corner with ‘backs’ leading to a terrace of houses at the side and behind the school. I definitely do not remember the shops especially 3 together ,that’s not to say they could have been demolished but the hoses in place of them don’t look ‘newish’ to me.

Ron there's a School Row listed in the Wigan Streets 1903
section as being 599-619 Atherton Road Hindley Green

Tom and Rich look at item 27483, The Cotton Tree pub with the elaborate architecture at the top. See if it matches the above pub on this photo. You may see it better than me.

Veronica, the shops on the left could possibly have been replaced by the newish house where Cootes and Sullivans and another family lived . I've looked at the picture you mentioned and I can see some similarities to the Cotton Tree. You posted a photograph sometime ago taken from the corner of John Street, I can't locate it ,would you know the number ? I

It’s times like this when I wish my dad was here he would have known. To hear him talk he would have put gas in every house in Wigan..;o))

Is there still a Cambridge st

Comment by: Veronica on 29th April 2024 at 22:08

The actual road is there but it’s not called Cambridge St any longer. The Silverwell pub is still at the bottom of the road on the corner. That’s all that’s left.
