The Stanier Tank will uncouple and then pull the train back to Manchester.
Tank engines can still do the same speed in reverse.

I have previously posted a few messages on different photo's of Wigan Central Station but this reminds of the day, probably late 1950's when myself and group of lads took ta return journey to Bickershaw 1 1/2D return.
The carriages were compartmentalised and as we pulled into the station one of my mates (who's name I shall not mention) opened the door and jumped out.
I can see him now doing somersaults and rolling down the platform until he crashed into a hoarding. He jumped up, brushed himself off and ran away laughing with one of the porters in pursuit!!!!!

Wasn't there a turntable at the far end?

Comment by: Colin Traynor on 22nd September 2023 at 10:58

I don't recall a turntable so not sure how the engines were moved from front to back, one of life's mystery's. Maybe they detached from the front and shunted around until they couple up at the front?????
I am sure some railway buff will have the answer.

There was a turntable near to where Kwik Save use to be on Warrington Road. Ideal for engines with tenders, but no need for a tank engine to use one.

I remember these engines on this line and Garry is correct and often saw them pulling the coached in reverse

Check out item number 28106 by Bill Lyons about the turntable.
Read his caption.
The turntable was actually located in between the canal and ince station railway line.
Ideally used to turn round engines with tenders but not needed for tank engine. Infact, the tank engine was mainly used on that line.

Colin the coaches on this line in 1950s and 1960s were known as BR mk1 suburban coaches with long bench seats from door to door. Horrible if you need the toilet, but great if you were courting.
