I was told that the Half Way House was named thus due to being 'half way' between Orrell and Wigan.
I think it's more likely to be halfway along the A577, Ormskirk to Boothstown road.
Both my Grt Grandfather & Grandfather, both named John Bradshaw were recorded as born & living at Halfway House, I think probably it was in the area of the pub & not in the pub itself.
Vernier, I was always told it was the halfway point between Wigan and Abbey Lakes on the tram route along there, and maybe the want of a better name for tram stop or an ale house at the time.
That is what i was told what Cyril said ,also that is what i was always told by my parents, and by the way looking at the photo where the APOLLO sign is ,was were i was born in DEC 1947 for there used to be about 6 small two up,two down pit cottages as i say i was born in number 460 Ormskirk Road the Half -Way -House pub is where my family frequented back in the day thanks for Rev David Long for bringing fond memories of that area.
I've no idea what the Apollo shop was or what they sold Alan, I can't even remember seeing it when going past. The only shop I can remember and know being there was Graham Fairhurst TV and Radio and I've been told that it is now a Greengrocers, and Pierre Vernier may call in there for a big bag of their King Eddie's.
I lived opposite this pub at 502 Ormskirk Road. It was my dad's local.
