It has a long telephone number for 1935. Was it the 1990s when the prefixed by 2 six figure telephone numbers for Wigan came in?

Cyril, I think the last digit is not a number, The actual number is 23531.

I would say 2353

Lovely! It looks very posh, and just fancy the thought of a "luncheon" or "banquet" "deawn Wallgate"! I remember going for a meal there in the 1970s when it was a "Berni Inn". The proud information about what is available reminds me of a book I once read about New Brighton through the 1950s...one cafe advertised "bread and butter cut corner-to-corner"...the proprietor must have thought that showed it to be a bit up-market! Thanks for showing us these old cafe/restaurant adverts, Ron...they are fascinating!

Looking at the photo I-can only imagine posh people from Wigan Lane area in those days going for ‘luncheon’ and high teas. Certainly not folk from Scholes! I wonder what people from that era would think of ‘their’ Wigan now…:o))

There is some quite interesting information about the Minorca Hotel in this link from Wigan Local History & Heritage Society. https://www.wiganlocalhistory.org/king-street-heritage-action-zone/introduction-to-the-street-that-was

Irene, I can remember anther slogan 'and buttered to the corners.'
Some folks would say "they put the butter on then scrape it off."
I too can imagine it being expensive Veronica, and everyone with their 'pinkie' up at a right angle to the cup - and definitely no slurping.

An aspect of 1930s Wigan not mentioned by Orwell .

Cyril, When the Wigan Observer was printed and published next to the Minorca at Rowbottom Square from 1853 to 1966, the phone had only four digits even back in 1959. So I would say the Minorca phone number would be 2353.

We once had a meal in there and the food was ok. but the service was terrible. We sat down looked at the menu then waited and waited for the waitress to come and take our order. People came in after us and got seen to. In the end I went to the bar and asked when would we been seen to and I pointed out at least 3 groups who had come in after us and been seen to. We eventually had our meal and I paid at the bar we both then went to the loo and when I came out my girlfriend said she had been accused of not paying the bill. I was not a happy chap and asked to see the manager who got a flea in his ear for the shoddy service never went in after that.
