Thank you for another great pic of historical Wigan town centre. Market Place had real character back then compared to the dull lifeless place it has become in recent years.

You are absolutely right Neil !!

My late cousin Fred Foster would tell you that his father bought the top deck of a defunct steam tram & used it to house his chickens behind the shop in Billinge Rd, Pemberton.

Helen, didn't know you were related to Fred? Have you read his reminiscences of growing up in Pemberton? They are on the web site

Yes Ron, I was lucky to have Fred as my cousin & have read his memories on WW . I do read them again ffrom timme to time. What a memory he had !

He made some great marmalade too<g> Every time I went to his house to buy some. I would be there ages, listening to his tales. I went to Highfield junior school and when I mentioned a boy or girl who was in my class, He knew all about their families..

Ron, I dont think Fred was religious in the true sense but he did alot of good...he & Edna made lots of jam & marmalade for the church , think it was th church at Highfield where they were married. We never paid a visit without leaving with a jar of something !

Comment by: RON HUNT on 11th July 2022 at 14:54

Every time I went I would try a different flavour of marmalade<g>

I have just remembered Ron...in one chapter of Fred's memories he wrote of ' his Uncle Billy ' going to give the boys sections of the Mitchell St Chapel a talk of Life in India...Uncle Billy was my Dad.
