Item #: 33373
Photograph taken in 1876 The chapel was built in 1769. I am guessing that Chapel Lane got its name from this Chapel. Does anyone know the location?
Thanks to Wigan Archives.

Genuki:
Presbyterian church,
Chapel Lane,
Wigan

Cemeteries
The church has/had a graveyard.

Church History
It was founded before 1864. It is now closed, but we do not know the date of closure .

The Presbyterian church was influenced by Calvinism which rejected bishops and believed that the church should be governed by a hierarchy of general assembly, synod, presbytery and kirk sessions attended by ministers and elders of equal rank. Presbyterianism flourished in the 17th and early 18th centuries but in the later 18th century many Presbyterian churches adopted Unitarianism.

In 1972 the Presbyterian Church of England merged with the Congregational Church to form the United Reformed Church.

Maps
It was located at SD5846505433 (Lat/Lon 53.543887, -2.62827).

Ron . There was a church situated in Chapel Lane, in the section between king Street, and Millgate. It was on the opposite side to the old fire station. I do not know what religious persuasion it is, or was, nor do I know whether it is still in that location.

Albert,I do remember a church where you have explained but it was being used as a sales room for furniture..my Mam bought me a lovely bureau from there, but I don't remember it having railings at the front nor was the pavement so wide.

The congregation last meeting in Chapel Lane. became part of the Inited Reormed Church in Mesnes RoadHerbert Lemon Senior Classics Master in my day at WGS was an elder It relied heavily on Scottish & Irish Protestant immigrants to the town.
It flourished in the days of a multiplicity of Scotch Drapers mostly living in Dicconson Street

This Presbyterian Church on Chapel Lane was built in 1877, whether it replaced the one in the above photo or it was in another location there's nothing to say. I'm wondering if maybe it was the building at the rear of the main church building, I'm sure that there are also other photos of this church in the Album took from different angles.

This would have been the one you remember Albert, it was demolished in the early 1980s when Riverway dual carriageway was built.

Thank you Cyril, and Donald for your clear comments. All such a long time ago. I remember that there was also a pawn brokers, and an alleyway that led into Harrogate Street.
