The changes to the beacon are noticeable. The last time I visited the place was January 1984 (photo in due course.) Then you could see over to Liverpool and North Wales, now the trees /shrubs have taken the view as indicated on the notice board near the beacon. In the 1950's this was an Sunday afternoon visit with Mum& Dad as a walk from Standish via Parbold across the field and footpaths. Sometimes we caught the bus to Parbold then across the paths.
I have just noticed that I entered the incorrect date on the heading -was the 29th August. Whenever I look at the RH photo in my album, I can remember that day like it was yesterday. the young lady was my fiance' and we had been visiting my parents in Standish before taking her home to the Wirral. I was living in Irvine at the time. Having visited the beacon, got as far as Westhead when the clutch failed on my car. RAC called and towed us to a garage in Ormskirk for repair. which was closed then took us to the station so we get the train to Liverpool and over to the Wirral. Had to stay the night in her Dad's house (all proper by the way) then I returned to Scotland by train the following day via Wigan. Collected the car the following weekend. £15 was the charge for the repair. That lady & I will celebrate 50 years marriage shortly and we can tell tales of our adventures of cars breaking down during the 70's,80's & 90's and into this century.
