The remains of a lock, at Dean, which was on the River Douglas when it was navigable, in the early 1770's.

Great photo Ron - this is the sluice gate that replaced the lock to control the water level in the river. The River Navigation from here to the Ribble stopped being used in the early 1770s when it was bypassed by the canal (the Navigation had been in use from 1742). The River was still used from here into Wigan until it was made redundant by the canal finely which reached Wigan in 1794.
