Standishgate 1910 - comparison with "now".

A view of Ron's uploaded photo of part of Standishgate and the view some 117 years later for comparison.
I believe the end of the mock Tudor building (Tudor revival) in the present day view, corresponds to the very right end of Ron's original 1910 photo.

I don't know if it is my eyeballing, but the angle of the two photos seem to have a distinct difference. Is there any other way to compare the two?

Its certainly steeper on Standishgate in days of yore!

The 'increase' in gradient may be down to the fact the old black and white photo is slightly out of perpendicular - all the people and street furniture; lamp posts and tram gantries etc, seem to be leaning slightly to the right.
This has the effect of making Standishgate look steeper than it is.

I think Mick's explanation is the right one.

TBH I feel that with the steepness o the road it looks like the right side of Standishgate going up to the Royal Oak, with St Johns CMC at the bottom of the Picture. The only uncertainty is that the convent school was there maybe this is taken before the school was built.

Just a thought, the original picture hasn't been flipped at some time before the writing was put on at the bottom ?

Didn't the Royal Arcade join Standishgate with Marsden St running parallel with Mesnes St? and the shops to the left of the Arcade isn't that where the British Home Store stood?

I think that you are right Carl. They are different places on Standishgate.

They are the same location.... check out the latest Standishgate picture on the site. As has already been said the apparent steepness is due to the orientation of the photograph. Then check the photos on the site where you appear to think it is At the time of the photograph the Convent would have been there...

It looks the same view to me. If you look at the shape of the roof/chimney in the last shadowy building on the left of the old photo, this is the same as the end building in the new pic too.
