Thanks to Trevor Smith( Smith's Book Shop) for the photograph
Get back to TLS Ron, the shop frontage clearly shows, Oliver SOMERS. Some more good old pics here, thanks to you and Trevor Smith
This 'summer' spell of weather has addled my brain..
I think there was a shop further down in front of the Royal Arcade when I went to school. Almost opposite what is now Subway.
Oliver Somers had two shops near to Standishgate more or less opposite each other, the one on the right ,looking towards Standishgate, sold all the sports gear, Shirts, shorts socks etc. (Bought my first JOCK STRAP from there) and the one opposite sold Bicycles. I think at one time it could have belonged to TOM HUGHES?
I wouldn't have said opposite. The other one was well down past the Market Hotel almost on Standishgate.
This isn't the original Oliver Somers shop... as I said... there were two shops on either side of the road near to Standishgate. One was next door to the cobblers come key cutting shop. and the other bike shop was opposite it.
Check out the pictures of Mesnes street, on the site, and you can see the OLIVER SOMERS signage on the side of the building and also the interior of the Bike shop
Originally ted hughes cycle shop.
TOM Hughes Freddy.
The cobbler's shop next to Oliver Sommer's shop was Bert Smiths. I think Freddie is confusing Ted Hughes the poet with Tom Hughes the cyclist.
Didn't this shop used to have a 'Michelin man' figure stuck on the wall-front?
John - in the 1980s it had an inflatable Michelin man on a first floor window ledge.
It was there in 1959
