A late afternoon scene as the engine enters the up platform. Notice the tall signal on the left; this was designed for sighting purposes. The booking hall is intact and the waiting room, complete with roaring fire in winter, is still in use. The engine will have had an easy run downhill from Upholland tunnel. The footbridge could be tricky when the frost fell in winter and you had to hold tight going down to both platforms. I still remember the little cardboard tickets travelling from Pemberton to Wigan Wallgate on spotting days...I feel sorry for the kids today, they missed out on the magic of steam. Happy times these were in the sixties, watching the locomotives.
Well said Jarvo, everything you said was true.
All the best.
Cheers, Garry, and all the best to you too.
I can almost smell the smoke and steam from that engine.
You're right Jarvo.
unusual to see a big steamer on a local train, but the year is 1966.i would have thought if it was alocal train it would be a dmu.
jarvo she as no reporting number so its not a special,do you have any other info.
BB: Black fives were still used on the Exchange to destinations east as late as 1967. It's not a special like you said, but could be a train to Newcastle.
Late afternoon. It could be a football special.
One lamp on top = slow stopping passenger train..
