This was taken in 2007 just before it was completely demolished, When we were kids at Highfield School this was a sweet shop run by Molly Close. It caught fire some time in 1938 or thereabouts. I can still smell the smoke and see the burnt sweets on the floor. We were strictly forbidden to go near it but being lads we couldn't keep away!! Its last use was for a storage place for acrow props by Colin Heyes. Another piece of old Pemberton gone forever.

the shop was just below the Hare and Hounds pub. The house that you can see on the left is in Calderbank Street and is the only house there

I'd forgotten all about this building. I used to live in Little Lane, and walked past it quite often, but never knew that it used to be a sweet shop.

As I used to go to school at Highfield junior's and senior in around 1955- 1962 the only toffee shop I used was the one across the road from Pemberton railway station or when coming out of enfield st just right round the corner, I recall we used to ask the old lady to get us some toffee from the top shelf,so when she turned to climb the steps we would FLOG loads of the penny tray ,then tell we've changed our minds go out then divvy the penny arrow's between us all ,good owd days.

The sweet shop opposite the station was called Little Billies. It was run by Helen and Gladys and their niece was Jennifer Moss who played Lucille in Coronation Street.
