My uncle James (Jimmy) Whittle worked in Hindley no 2 most of his working life, and was most certainly there in 51, I wonder if he would have been on duty when that went past, one of his hobbies was home photography and developing his own, but when he died my brother inadvertantly threw a lot of his photos away, such a loss, I know he had a few of me on both the footplate of various engines, as well as being in the box
I know the bloke sitting in air-conditioned comfort in the driving pod of a modern train-set is driving far more horse-power than this bloke, but somehow man v. machine looks more of a triumph for man here.

That footplate sure is open, as you say Rev. man and machine. Draughty.
