i bet the old chap could tell a few tales
Would this man be stood at the top of Great Acre?
i would say he was stood on Vine Street.
The house by his right shoulder was my grandads.
Looks like he arrived too late for pint in the Miners Tent, probably thinking "what the............?"
I read recently that the site vacated by the used car dealer between Eckersley St and Ellis St is to be used for a housing development, so it has gone full circle. There was the Miner's Tent pub, Mrs Webb's Chippy and then a row of cottages there at one time.
This is at the top of Perch Street, with Bedford St facing it and at the bottom of the street is Northumberland Street
Lived in Wright St opposite the G&D pub between 1964 and '67 before this decimation of the area took place. Our house No 3 is still there and backed on to where A&P Coles dealership was. Next door was demolished to make way for the petrol station and garage on the corner of Eckersley St to expand. I remember catching the Wigan Corporation bus in front of the G&D into town when I was at Wigan Grammar School it used to cost 1d. Still there is more left of the old Whelley than old Scholes where I lived till we moved to Wright St. They said it's progress. Well ask the older generation about that.
