The owner, Clarice Young, behind the counter with her mother, Florence Naylor. Shop was next to Wallgate Sub-Post Office where Gordon Ford is now. It sold, amongst other things, non-alcoholic drinks, ice-cream, cigarettes and tobacco, sweets, a small range of cosmetics, toiletries and perfumes and fireworks in season! Very popular with the workers at Trencherfield and Taylors Mills.

WHO dosen't remember this shop? What a blast from the past!

Comment by: Dave Marsh on 17th March 2013 at 10:31

We used to have a penny cordial there on our way tofish down the Flash.

There was another temperance bar just over the canal bridge where the Volkswagen place is now. We used to call in there for a pint of herb bitters and think that we were grown up. The man who ran it had a navy shirt on and he wore a skull and crossbones ring on his finger. There was a fruit machine on the wall.

Thankyou so much for this photo. I don't recall this particular shop as I lived in Ince, but the "temp" on Ince Bar was so similar. I remember "drene" shampoo and all the little cards hung up on the wall holding babies' dummies, rolls of bandage, combs etc.etc. The little toffee-scales and the three-cornered toffee-bags, "tapes" of "Aspro" and little bottles of patent medicines that our Mam's had such faith in. A wonderful picture.....how I would love to be able to walk in there now!

I well remember this and the other temp. bar. which was more of a bar not a shop. It was before the canal bridge between Sharp St and Wilcock St. I believe the lady there was called Faith Greenhalgh.

Irene,I just knew you'd love this one..and I'd forgotten all about Drene, and do you think to the left in the cabinet looks like Ponds face cream..my mam always used that..it's a lovely reminder of times gone by.

Irene,I posted a a drawing of the temperance bar at Ince with the with the kind permission of Tom Whalley,of Whalleys pet Shop.If you put Whalleys tempernce bar in the search box you will find the photo.

Comment by: ann21 on 17th March 2013 at 20:30

panc That's the one I remember at the top of Dobb's fold which we used to call Dog's Fold. I think they used to sell Vimto.

Comment by: irene roberts on 18th March 2013 at 09:47

I have seen that, Dave, many thanks. I have a book called "Vimto, the story of a soft drink", and there is a picture of Whalley's in it taken in the 1920s. Maureen, you and I should be like Gary Sparrow in Goodnight Sweetheart.....wouldn't we enjoy going back in time into all these lovely old shops?!

the one nr the bridge was known as mushy chads when i lived there next door to jack craggs fruit and veg ,he kept his horse in stables at the back of the shop great time then coz i was a kid ,ha ha

Comment by: Andy C on 18th March 2013 at 19:12

Spot on les, wasn't one of Jack Craggs horses called Dolly?
Mushy used to talk through his nose and i mimicked him once only being a kid and he whacked me round the head, i shot off home and told my dad who went round and threatened to throttle him. It seems like three life times ago now, happy days indeed!

to ann21 : I lived on Dobbs Fold but it became Haig Street before I was born in 1935. The temp. bar was much nearer to Seven Stars bridge next to Jack Craggs. I remember getinng worms for fishing from Jacky's pile of horse manure.

Hi Les yes it's me, i thought it was you straight away with your first posting and name.
Where's the time gone? It doesn't seem two minutes since we were building "bommys" on the land at the back of your house and raiding all the derelict houses around Wallgate for wood and god knows whatever else.lol

I remember this shop and these ladies, I can smell the shop now thinking about it. Not a dirty smell but a mixture of sweets, toiletries and I don't exactly know what but when I look at this photo it brings back luvly memories
