Further to Cyril's enquiry on the Queen's Hotel photo, an extract from a 25 inch to the mile OS map, showing the town centre in about 1890, prior to the construction of Library St.

I think this is before 1890.There is no Library St as stated
and there is no Station Road. What was the year Central Station was built?? The original Cheshire Lines Station I believe was in Darlington St,

That's a smashing map Mick, thanks for uploading it, plenty of alleyways and yards, wonder how many folks lived in those yards and also on Elbow Lane, pity no photographs are available of this area of Wigan of long ago.

Alba - Wigan Central Station opened in October 1892.
Prior to that, there was a terminus in Darlington St as you say.

Two shops were demolished to make an opening for Library St, # 1 Market Place, a book shop belonging to Daniel Barlow and # 3 Market Place , a General Drapers belonging to Atherton and Gould. There is a photo of the two shops in a book called Wigan Through Wickham's Window published in 1988.
