John I am surprised at the number of cars. Who had a car then?
I though there might have been overhead cables for the trolley buses but I can't see any.
Three Crowns Pub on the left, opposite, was Pendleburys, & on the corner of Crompton St. was Maltbys wines & spirits shop
There were no trolleys in Wigan, only trams and these stopped running in 1931. I was taken for a ride on the last tram by my mother when I was 6months old. There was a Pendlebury's before the war in Wigan, The WGS had prizes donated by the owners, John and Gerard Pendlebury.
I think there were more cars owners before WW2 than people today realise. My grandfather had one. I believe the petrol shortage caused many to be taken off the road & stored up on bricks in garages, like my Grandfathers. After the war cars were hard to come by as those manufactured were for export only, you had to have a good reason to be allocated a car then.
Fred, there were trolleys in Wigan, but only very briefly and only on the Martland Mill route. They were single deckers which were tried out because the tram tracks on this route needed replacing and the cost was considered excessive. In the event, it was decided to go for the all bus option, as someone else has comented, in 1931.
Great feedback thanks. These old photos cerainly get the memories back and some wonderful gems are provide for all.
My maternal Grandma, Marion (Minnie) Crawford was the landlady of the Three Crowns Pub around 1937
