Photograph of the Gathurst Viaduct, under construction. This is the second largest bridge on the M6. It is 800 feet long over six spans and is 87feet above the normal river level. The reinforced concrete piers consist of four 6 feet diameter columns supporting a cill beam and carried on 19inch diameter bored cast in-situ reinforced concrete piles. The reinforced concrete deck is carried on ten continuous welded plate girders extending over the full length of the bridge and 10feet deep

Thomas, work started on the Gathurst Viaduct in September 1959, the first stretch of the M6 opened in December 1958, known then as the Preston by-pass.

The viaduct was opened to the public a few days before traffic used it for the 1st time. I remember walking over it and being amazed.
