Wallgate

I too had to stop whilst coming up from Market Street. I was on my driving test at the time. Policemen's direction signals (and turning hand-signals) were part of the driving test at the time.
Great memories John, like you say for us oldies. I had a Triumph Herald and used the reserve tank on many occasions, sometimes forgetng to re-set the lever when i filled up and suffering the cosequences.
In the early 60s I too remember having to stop at the top of Wallgate in an Austin A40 van with a column gearchange. When I was waved on no way could I get the lever to go into a forward gear(I seem to remember it was a common fault on this model) I wasn't as fortunate with plod as the previous guy who commented. As the traffic behind me started to pile up he strolled over very slowly and very sarcastically asked me if I was sure I had a driving licence. At this point the gear engaged and the van shot forward straight into Market St. I never looked back but expected a knock on the door for days after.
This is my grandad directing traffic and I really want to get this picture framed for my mum.
