A scene familiar to us older Wiganners and much missed. Looks like the photo was taken on a Saturday afternoon judging by the number of people. What a busy place it was in those days, of course there was no out of town shopping to attract people away from the town centre. How I miss the old Wigan, the shops and Arcades, smells of pies and freshly made bread and the ironmongers, the bustle and the friendliness of the place, the maroon and cream corporation buses. Of course Woolies too. Things seemed so much simpler then and life much easier paced.

Trying to figure out, what the black & white pole is for. It is set into the pavement further down from the belisha beacon.

Albert, I think the black and white pole was a parking restrictions sign. I seem to remember that, even in those days, on Standishgate there were signs on each side of the road stating on one side 'No parking on this side on even dates' and on the other 'No parking on this side on odd dates'.

Thank you Derekb. Although I patrolled Standishgate many times in the late fifties, early sixties,it has gone completely out of my memory, relating to these posts. I suppose at seventy eight, I can be excused.

There was such an elegance in the vehicles of that period, the old Morris Minor followed by the Triumph Mayflower, turning into Standishgate, meanwhile coming up the hill are a number of marques that are long forgottent, lead be a Standard Vanguard. Beautiful wheels all of them
